Compelling Design has been a proud supporter of Project COLORS International for several years, and 2007 was a big year COLORS and co-founder Sunyata Choyce.
COLORS was started in 2004 by Sunyata and her friend Anke Bushing of Germany. They got the idea as international volunteers working with AIDS Orphans in South Africa. Taking their own initiative, a project plan was created to help the children of the orphanage. The result was the formation of Project COLORS International, which gave them the resources they needed for the collection of scholastic and basic medical supplies, care packages, a multi-activity room and day trips.
COLORS is truly an international organization - they currently have projects in the Dominican Republic and South Africa, as well as running an international distribution program with volunteers, travellers and interns that reach over 15 countries!
These efforts have not gone unnoticed. On Novemeber 15, Sunyata received the inaugural Red Cross Young Humanitarian Award for Nova Scotia.
From the Halifax Daily News:
"I hope it inspires a new wave of youth to start doing international work," she said of the award, for which she was nominated by community members.
"It's not such a far-fetched idea anymore. It's something that can be completely in the realm of reality and hopefully this will inspire more youth to take on similar projects to what I've been doing over the years. It's really awesome that I get to be the first one (recipient)." [source]
Sunyata is truly deserving of this award, and the recognition that it will bring to COLORS.
